This is Alison Gould's CSC 103 Homework Assignment for 2/22/12. Below, you will find the illustrated report for the computer lab.
The make and model number of the computer that my partner and I took apart is Dell HPU2106F3. We were at station 16. When we first removed the computer cover, the parts immediately visible included the motherboard, the fan, the CD/DVD drive, the power supply, and the RAM chip.
The cables, seen here, connect everything to the power supply.

- The processor was adhered to the fan, as seen at left.
- According to Wikipedia, a processor "incorporates the functions of a computer's central processing unit (CPU) on a single integrated circuit, (IC) or at most a few integrated circuits. It is a multipurpose, programmable device that accepts digital data as input, processes it according to instructions stored in its memory, and provides results as output. In addition, the faster the processor is, the more programs and computations the computer can run.

- Inside the hard disk is a disc and a needle to read the disc. According to Wikipedia, "A hard disk drive (HDD; also hard drive, hard disk, or disk drive) is a device for storing and retrieving digital information, primarily computer data. It consists of one or more rigid (hence "hard") rapidly rotating discs (often referred to as platters), coated with magnetic material and with magnetic heads arranged to write data to the surfaces and read it from them." - On the motherboard, you can see both the battery and the crystal. The battery is a Panasonic CR2032. It is used to power the crystal.
- The lines on the motherboard are the internal wires connecting the inputs with everything so as to work as one unit. The motherboard itself is "the central printed circuit board (PCB) in many modern computers and holds many of the crucial components of the system, providing connectors for other peripherals...It also connects the central processing unit and hosts other subsystems and devices." - The crystal determines the processing frequency of the CPU. According to Wikipedia, "A crystal oscillator is an electronic oscillator circuit that uses the mechanical resonance of a vibrating crystal of piezoelectric material to create an electrical signal with a very precise frequency. This frequency is commonly used to keep track of time (as in quartz wristwatches), to provide a stable clock signal for digital integrated circuits, and to stabilize frequencies for radio transmitters and receivers."
