CSC103 PC Demolition Lab 2012
The PC Demolition Lab is part of CSC 103. This wiki page is designed and submitted by Wenxin Zhang.
Overview
The computer which students took apart is Dell DCNE.
After opening the computer, these parts are visible:
- Mother Board
- RAM(Random Access Memory)
- Cables
- CD/DVD Player
- Power Supply
- Fans
Motherboard
The motherboard is at the bottom of the whole computer.
- The processor, RAM, the crystal are located on the motherboard.
- Also Battery is on the mother board, and is used to
- Keep track of time
According to Motherboard Wikipedia Page, A motherboard (sometimes alternatively known as the mainboard, system board, planar board or logic board) is a printed circuit board (PCB) found in all modern computers which holds many of the crucial components of the system, such as the central processing unit (CPU) and memory, and provides connectors for other peripherals.
Processor
- Location: near the fan
- Intel Pentium Processor (model number unreadable)
- According to Processor Wikipedia Page, Processor or Processing unit may refer to:Central processing unit (CPU), an electronic circuit which executes computer programs, containing a processing unit and a control.Processing unit, in Von Neumann computer architecture, contains an arithmetic logic unit (ALU) and processor registers.
RAM
- Random Access Memory, made by SAMSUNG
- 512MB, 2 modules
- Location: Below CD player and power supply
According to RAM wilipedia page, Random-access memory (RAM) is a form of computer data storage. A random-access device allows stored data to be accessed in very nearly the same amount of time for any storage location, so data can be accessed quickly in any random order. In contrast, other data storage media such as hard disks, CDs, DVDs and magnetic tape, as well as early primary memory types such as drum memory, read and write data only in a predetermined order, consecutively, because of mechanical design limitations. Therefore the time to access a given data location varies significantly depending on its physical location.
Crystal
- Location:on the motherboard
- It's used to control and regulate the processor.
Cables
- To supply the power and connect the motherboard and hardwares
CD/DVD Player
- CD Drive or DVD Drive
- Location: Upper-right corner
According to CD/DVD drive wikipedia page, In computing, an optical disc drive (ODD) is a disk drive that uses laser light or electromagnetic waves within or near the visible light spectrum as part of the process of reading or writing data to or from optical discs. Some drives can only read from discs, but recent drives are commonly both readers and recorders, also called burners or writers. Compact discs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs are common types of optical media which can be read and recorded by such drives. Optical drive is the generic name; drives are usually described as "CD" "DVD", or "Blu-ray", followed by "drive", "writer", etc.
Power Supply Unit

- Upper-right corner
- Max=280W
According to Power Supply Wikipedia Page, A power supply unit (PSU) converts mains AC to low-voltage regulated DC power for the internal components of a computer. Modern personal computers universally use a switched-mode power supply. Some power supplies have a manual selector for input voltage, while others automatically adapt to the supply voltage.
Hard Disk
- 250.0GB
- Under CD player
- Inside is magnetic disk
According to Hard Disk Wikipedia Page,
A hard disk drive (HDD; also hard drive, hard disk, or disk drive) is a non-volatile, random-access, magnetic data storage device. Introduced by IBM in 1956, HDDs have been the dominant secondary storage device in general purpose computers since the early 1960s. They have maintained this position against competing products, including today's solid-state drives, through technological advances in recording capacity and continued improvements in cost per unit of storage and reliability.
